As a little girl, I always dreamed about my wedding. I’d lie on my bed with my childhood bestie (who is now my MOH!) and dream up elaborate wedding scenarios. We discussed what colors we would choose, where the ceremony would take place, and who our dream fiancé would be. It’s no surprise that when my fiancé Blake and I started discussing our future, I was in a tizzy of anticipation.
After months of guessing when he’d pop the question, my suspicions were confirmed when I accidentally caught him practicing getting on one knee in the kitchen. Even though I knew what was coming, nothing could prepare me for the sheer joy I felt when Blake got down on one knee and slid a gold family diamond over my left ring finger. It was happening.
I was always told that planning a wedding would be the most exciting time of my life, and I was ready to dive headfirst into the world of wedding florals and bridal salons. I was blissfully unaware of the challenges that planning a wedding can bring, and the many emotions that get wrapped up in such a big life event.
Navigating Fitness, Health, and Wellness as a Modern Bride
I quickly discovered there’s so much more to planning a wedding than finding a dress and a venue. Aside from the sheer cost of getting married nowadays, I have been most surprised at the toxic diet culture that runs rampant in the wedding industry.
As soon as I got engaged, my Instagram was flooded with special “diets” and “cleanses” for brides ahead of the big day. My TikTok became infiltrated with “shredding for the wedding” videos. I learned that many bridal salons do not carry dresses over a size 12, and many trunk shows only carry sample sizes between 0-8.
Numerous bridal attendants asked me during my appointment if I was planning on losing weight for my wedding, to which I answered with a resounding, “Nope!” It became increasingly obvious that diet culture and anti-fat bias are a palpable undercurrent for many people working and living within the wedding industry.
Planning a wedding is an extremely exciting life event, but we would be remiss to disregard the stress and emotional levity that big life events can also bring. There is pressure, not just for the bride, to “look” and “behave” a certain way. There is a societal pressure to fit into the wedding industry’s beauty standards. As soon as Blake and I got engaged, it seemed like everyone around us went on diets. This left us asking ourselves… “should we be doing the same?”
Saying Yes to Wedding Workout Plans—Without the Toxic Diet Culture
I don’t believe anyone should feel pressured to alter their body or diet in preparation for their wedding day. However, as a trainer and nutritionist who has worked with many brides-to-be, it’s common (and normal!) for many women to want to feel their best on their big day.
I encourage my brides to avoid any type of restriction in their diet, plus find a wedding workout plan that they can look forward to. One that will help manage their mental and emotional health! Think about how you want to feel when looking back at your wedding photos. I can guarantee you’ll want to remember how happy you felt at your wedding, not how hungry you felt.
Prioritizing joyful and stress-relieving movement is essential for those navigating the wedding planning process. Personally, Dance Cardio has been a lifesaver for me! Consuming a diet filled with nutrient-rich whole foods is also essential to feeling your best and maintaining the energy to handle high-stress situations (hello, wedding planning). Whether it’s telling your in-laws that, NO, they cannot invite their distant cousin to the wedding or finally deciding on floral arrangements, leading a healthy lifestyle can help equip you with the energy to navigate it all with ease.
Wedding Workout Plan with obé
Today, countless “bridal boot camps” on the fitness market feed into the multi-billion dollar weight-loss industry and promise unrealistic results. Many of these programs also fail to provide what many women planning a wedding need most: emotional support and stress management tools.
That’s where The Wedding Program with obé stands out! A 7-day course (with bonus workouts!) that can be repeated as often as you’d like, this wedding workout plan puts your emotional and mental health at the core. Featuring workouts led by myself (including a strength training workout with Blake!) plus other obé fitness instructors who have tied (or are about to tie) the knot, the program takes a holistic approach.
Yes, our bridal program provides workouts that will leave you sweaty and on an endorphin high. But we also supplement that with Yoga and Breathwork to support you during one of the most exciting (and stressful) times of your life. All 6 of the featured instructors are going or have gone through the experience themselves, so we took everything we’ve learned to put together a program that accurately supports the modern bride! The woman who is juggling a job and planning a wedding, all while attempting to maintain a social life.
What’s on the full lineup? Partner Strength, Dance Cardio, a Walk + Talk to share wedding prep stories and tips, Pilates, Boxing (need that), Endurance, and a slow Vinyasa Flow. For bonus content, we have 10-minute Express Upper Body Strength, Upper Body Sculpt, Lower Body Core + Pilates, and a calming Breathwork.
Above all, obé’s wedding workout plan equips you with the tools to navigate this time in your life with ease. Shake off stress with movement and mindfulness, get stronger, and build cardiovascular endurance. It’s a guaranteed recipe for feeling like your best self!
As you approach your wedding day, remember that your worth is not wrapped up in the size of your bridal gown. Your day will be made special because of you and your partner’s love, not by how “defined” your abs may be.
