Meet the Breast Cancer Survivor Who Inspired This obéFORWARD

October is an important month to show love for all who are struggling with breast cancer, and for the obé team, it’s personal.

One of our crew members, 25-year-old Bianca Muñiz, is a breast cancer survivor who not only does fantastic work behind the camera, she’s also a singer-songwriter. And she is a board member of The Breasties, an organization that provides support, community, and aid to breast cancer patients of all ages. (Donate here!)

Bianca’s general badass-ery inspired Mary to create a very personal obéFORWARD class for this month (save the date: October 19!), during which Bianca will come out from behind the cameras at obé HQ and step into the Box as Mary’s co-teacher.

“Both of my grandmothers had breast cancer, my aunt passed away from it, and I’ve had a scare myself,” Mary says.

“So, it is always on my mind. Meeting and working with Bianca, you wouldn’t even begin to guess that someone like her went through what she did,” she says. “She is radiant from start to finish, and I was instantly pulled in towards her good energy. She humbly works behind the scenes at obé, but her depth (including her amazing voice!) is so great.”

All donations will benefit The Breasties, which was created by a group of women Bianca met when she was fresh out of college and facing breast cancer treatment.

“I was really young, and I was trying to find support. I couldn’t find it. I started posting about my journey and letting people know they weren’t alone. Through Instagram I found Paige, my best friend. And she started putting together events for people to meet and connect,” she says.

The other thing that happened as a result of having cancer? Bianca will soon add “personal trainer” and “yoga teacher” to her list of professions—because when she was diagnosed, she went to school on her own body. And she’s eager to share what she’s learned. (We told you she was a badass.)

“When I was diagnosed I knew I’d have a double mastectomy. I thought, How do I prepare for surgery? How do I come back from surgery?” she says. As a lifter already, she started a weightlifting regimen.

“I thought, I need to make sure my chest muscles are strong because they’re about to cut them open. I won’t be able to use my arms after surgery, so I need to make my core stronger. I prepped for all the things I would need.”

Post-surgery, yoga came into the picture as well because Bianca says it helped her mobility—and today she’s studying to be a fitness pro who can help others the way she helped herself.

“That’s why I chose to work at obé!” she says. “Especially as I’m studying to get my yoga and personal training certificate, I love being in this environment. Music playing all day long, people being active. I love it!”

The feeling’s mutual, Bianca. 💖
